Teaching Iowa History With Local Resources
Two day professional development covers (content) Iowa and the Civil War and (standards) the new Iowa Social Studies Standards.

Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, Johnston, Iowa

The new Iowa Social Studies standards K-12 incorporate Iowa history. As custodians of Iowa's history, museums wish to aid in educators' professional development and preparedness for teaching Iowa history in interactive and engaging ways that encourage community collaboration. Through this workshop, educators will learn and understand Iowa's role in history during the time of the Civil War and Westward Expansion. Educators will learn about utilizing artifacts from local museums, and will discuss strategies for incorporating Iowa artifacts and museums into their curriculum. Educators will also create a unit of study in object-based learning for his or her classroom that aligns with the Iowa Core English Language Arts Standards for History/ Social Studies.
